ओंकार ध्यान का वर्णन ‘छान्दोग्य उपनिषद्’में किया गया है। यह एक विशाल उपनिषद् है। ‘छान्दोग्य उपनिषद्’को 8 भागों में बांटा गया है। पहले भाग में ´ओंकार´ का ध्यानोपासना के भिन्न-भिन्न रूप में वर्णन किया गया है। वैदिक साहित्य में ´ओंकार´ का वर्णन इस प्रकार किया है कि ´ओंकार´ के ध्यान को ही जीवन का अंतिम लक्ष्य माना गया है। इसके अनुसार मानव जीवन में ´ओंकार´ ध्यान के अतिरिक्त कोई अन्य कार्य होना चाहिए। ‘ऊँ’ का महत्व का वर्णन उपनिषद् में मिलता है।
